PRESERVATION THURSDAY: THE 1862 U.S. – DAKOTA WAR THROUGH SARAH WAKEFIELD’S EYES

DEADWOOD – Deadwood History, Inc. and the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission will host a presentation by author Phyllis Cole-Dai on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. at the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center (HARCC), 150 Sherman Street, Deadwood. Hear captivating stories based on Beneath the Same Stars, a historical novel written by Phyllis Cole-Dai. The novel dives into Minnesota’s 1862 U.S. – Dakota War from the perspective of Sarah Wakefield. Sarah was a doctor’s wife who got caught up in the conflict. Audience members will learn about a largely forgotten war that still haunts the Upper Plains.

Phyllis Cole-Dai began pecking away on an old manual typewriter in childhood and never stopped. She has authored or edited more than a dozen books in multiple genres, “writing across what divides us.” Her second novel, The Singing Stick, is forthcoming in September. Originally from Ohio, she currently resides with her scientist-husband and two cats in a 130-year-old house in Brookings, South Dakota.
