HISTORY ON THE LAWN AT THE HISTORIC ADAMS HOUSE: OLD WEST SHOWDOWN

DEADWOOD – Deadwood History, Inc. and the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission will host a presentation by authors Kellen Cutsforth and Bill Markley at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, August 18, 2023, at the Historic Adams House, 22 Van Buren Street, Deadwood. The lecture is free for members and $5 for non-members. Please feel free to bring your lunch and a lawn chair. For more information call 605-722-4800. In case of inclement weather, the lecture will be moved to the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center (HARCC), 150 Sherman Street, Deadwood.

There are always at least two sides to every story. Authors Kellen Cutsforth and Bill Markley have co-written two books covering twenty controversial Old West stories: Will Rogers Medallion Award finalist Old West Showdown and its sequel Standoff at High Noon. For the first time, Cutsforth and Markley will debate in front of a live audience on such topics as: who was the real Calamity Jane, did Jack McCall kill Wild Bill Hickok for humiliating him over a card game or was he a paid assassin? Was the defeat of Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer at the Little Big Horn due to his miscalculations or did Captain Frederick Benteen disobey orders and was Major Marcus Reno drunk? If time permits, the dueling authors will cover additional topics from the books. Time will be carved out for questions and the authors will have their books available for purchase.

Kellen Cutsforth has published numerous books on the American West including Buffalo Bill, Boozers, Brothels, and Bare-Knuckle Brawlers and Buffalo Bill and the Birth of American Celebrity. He is a ghostwriter and has published articles in Wild West and True West magazines. He is also a featured columnist for Western Writers of America’s Roundup magazine.

Bill Markley, member of Western Writers of America, writes for Roundup, True West, and Wild West magazines. His Legendary West series includes the award-winning Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson, Billy the Kid and Jesse James, and Geronimo and Sitting Bull. His latest in the series is Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill Cody.
