JOB TITLE:  Tour Guide Coordinator for The Brothel Deadwood

REPORTS TO:  Communications Director

SUMMARY OF POSITION:  Reporting to the Communications Director the Tour Guide Coordinator is responsible for management and operation of the tour guides at The Brothel Deadwood including training and scheduling tour guides.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee all aspects of the tour:
    • Train/Coach employees to recite the scripts and make sure they know additional background information about the subject matter. Monitor adherence to the scripts.
  • Create and manage work schedule for tours guide to ensure appropriate coverage.  Must be prepared to cover any scheduling deficiencies.
  • Weekend and evening work may be required.
  • Ensure a high level of service and visitor satisfaction through oversight of all aspects of the visitor experience including customer service, visitor safety, and museum information.
  • Observe the physical appearance and maintenance of the properties and report deficiencies to the Curator of Collections, copying the Communication Director on the communication. 
  • Ensure that The Brothel Deadwood gift shop inventory is stocked on display shelves.  Oversee the cleanliness of the gift shop and restrooms.
  • Train/Coach employees how to confidently interact and engage with visitors, promote gift shop sales, and promote all the DHI properties.
  • Use appropriate disciplinary action when necessary with the guidance of the Human Resource Director and Communication Director.
  • Assist with group and motorcoach tours as needed at The Brothel Deadwood.
  • Coordinate and supervise weekly cleaning of the Brothel with the Curator of Collections and facilitate tour guides in assisting in the cleaning.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Other duties as assigned.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be physically capable of climbing several flights of stairs daily.   Able to bend, reach, stoop, sit, and stand for extended periods of time.   Must be able to lift or move objects up to 30 pounds.  Must be able to see, speak, and hear effectively (with or without reasonable accommodations). 

TYPICAL EQUIPMENT USED:

Must be able to operate office equipment including a computer, copier, telephone, POS system, and security system.

Tour Guide Manager

JOB TITLE:  Tour Guide Manager

REPORTS TO:  Communications Director

SUMMARY OF POSITION:  Reporting to the Communications Director the Tour Guide Manager is responsible for management and operation of the tour guides at the Historic Adams House and The Brothel Deadwood including hiring, training, and scheduling tour guides.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate with the Communication Director and Human Resource Director to interview and hire tour guides for the Adams House and The Brothel Deadwood.
  • Train/Coach employees to recite the scripts and make sure they know additional background information about the subject matter. Monitor adherence to the scripts.
  • Create and manage work schedule for tours guide to ensure appropriate coverage.  Must be prepared to cover any scheduling deficiencies.
  • Weekend and evening work may be required.
  • Ensure a high level of service and visitor satisfaction through oversight of all aspects of the visitor experience including customer service, visitor safety, and museum information.
  • Observe the physical appearance and maintenance of the properties and report deficiencies to the Curator of Collections, copying the Communication Director on the communication.

  • Use appropriate disciplinary action when necessary with the guidance of the Human Resource Director and Communication Director.
  • Assist with school, group, and motorcoach tours, as needed at the Historic Adams House and The Brothel Deadwood.
  • Coordinate and supervise weekly cleaning of the two properties with the Curator of Collection holding tour guides to accountability for assisting in the cleaning.

  • Assist with public programs and special events sponsored by DHI.

REQUIREMENTS:

Responsibilities:

  • Lead captivating and educational tours of The Brothel Deadwood, a historical landmark, ensuring visitors’ experiences are enjoyable and informative.
  • Provide accurate and engaging historical background information, anecdotes, and stories related to The Brothel and its significance in Deadwood’s history.
  • Adapt tour content and delivery to cater to diverse audiences, ensuring an inclusive and crowd-engaging experience for all.
  • Answer visitors’ questions and address any concerns or special requests in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all tour participants, maintaining a calm and orderly environment throughout the duration of the tour.
  • Collaborate with other tour guides and staff members to create a seamless visitor experience and contribute to the overall success of Deadwood History.

Requirements:

  • Possess excellent communication and public speaking skills.
  • Must feel comfortable with sensitive subject matter pertaining to the history of the Brothels in Deadwood.
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn about the history and significance of the Brothel’s in Deadwood.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays to accommodate our visitors’ needs.
  • Knowledge to operate a Point of Sale system (Shopify), promote gift shop sales, and restock merchandise.
  • Ability to promote the benefits and features specific to each of Deadwood History’s museums and cross-promote them.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work well within a team.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to walk and stand for extended periods.
  • A positive, enthusiastic, and approachable attitude with a strong commitment to exceptional customer service.

Education Intern

HOURS & SCHEDULE

10 Weeks, May-August 2024 (start and end date to be determined). Monday – Friday, including an occasional Saturday.

SUMMARY OF POSITION

Deadwood History, Inc. is excited to announce an opportunity for a dynamic and motivated individual to join our team as an Education Intern for the summer. As an Education Intern, you will have the chance to actively contribute to the planning and execution of educational programs while gaining valuable hands-on experience in the field of education.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assist the Education Director in developing and implementing engaging educational activities and curriculum for summer youth programs.

• Assist with giving guided tours to school groups.

• Supervise small to medium size groups of students in grades K-7.

• Research programming to enhance educational content and stay updated on relevant topics.

• Communicate effectively with families as well as students.

REQUIREMENTS

• Enrolled in an accredited educational program in the fall 2024-2025 school year. Focus on education, teaching, or a related field helpful but not mandatory.

• Passionate about fostering a positive learning environment for children.

• Excellent communication skills.

• Strong organizational abilities, attention to detail, and deadlines.

• Excellent speaking skills and enjoy being outdoors.

• Operate office equipment, including a computer, copier, telephone, and security system.

• Willingness to work flexible hours.

• Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented setting.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Capable of lifting 30 pounds. Able to bend, reach, stoop, stand, climb stairs, and/or walk over varied terrain for extended periods of time, and exposure to outdoor elements is necessary, at times. Must be able to see, hear, and speak effectively (with or without reasonable accommodations).
